What are the 4Cs?

Cut, color, clarity, and carat weight are a framework for comparing diamonds. Consider all four along with measurements and your budget.

1. Cut

Cut describes how proportions and finish help a diamond return light, affecting brightness, fire, and sparkle. Shape—such as round, oval, pear, or emerald—is different from cut quality. Grading terms can vary by shape and report type.

2. Color

On common colorless diamond scales, grades range from colorless toward more noticeable body color. Small differences may be hard to see once mounted. Compare stones under consistent lighting and check the report.

3. Clarity

Clarity describes internal inclusions and external blemishes. Some are visible only under magnification. A clarity grade alone does not guarantee a diamond looks clean to the unaided eye, so review photographs or video when available.

4. Carat

Carat measures weight, not diameter. Face-up size depends on shape and proportions, so compare millimeter measurements as well as carat weight.

How to choose

Start with the appearance you like, then compare stones within budget. Review the grading report, measurements, and actual images. Confirm whether the listing is for a loose diamond or finished jewelry, plus the gold karat, setting, and included documentation.
