IGI Lab-Grown Diamond Certification: What Buyers Should Know

What is an IGI report?

The International Gemological Institute (IGI) issues grading reports for diamonds, including lab-grown diamonds. Depending on the report type, it may record shape, measurements, carat weight, color, clarity, polish, symmetry, and other observations. Exact fields vary by report.

How to check a report

  1. Find the report number on the document or product details.
  2. Use IGI's official report-checking service and enter the number exactly.
  3. Compare the online record with the document and the diamond offered, including measurements and identifying details when available.
  4. Ask the seller about any mismatch before purchasing.

A report number or image alone does not prove that a particular stone is the one described. Confirm that the report corresponds to the diamond being sold.

What certification means

A grading report documents assessed characteristics. It is not the same as a warranty, an insurance appraisal, a guarantee of resale value, or a promise that a diamond will retain its purchase price.

Before buying

  • Confirm the report is for the exact diamond.
  • Review carat weight, shape, measurements, color, and clarity.
  • Check the setting metal, karat, included items, and return terms.

For LA FINDINGS products, check the individual listing to confirm specifications and whether an IGI report is included. Do not assume every product has identical documentation.
